LEVEL 6 - LATE VACANCY - Thurs 28th April - Audit Assistant Position - Stoke
Audit Assistant Intake: August 2016 Scheme:
Graduate Office: Stoke on Trent
We believe an audit should be of the highest quality, delivered by people who are passionate about auditing and, above all, be valuable to all clients. In Audit, our employees carry out independent checks to match a company’s financial statements with their current financial situation. Key to our audit process is an absolute commitment to quality. Audit quality and excellent client service go hand in hand. This message is instilled in all the people in our audit business and is fundamental to our culture.
Our client base is diverse, providing the opportunity to learn about different types of organisations from varying industry sectors.
Our approach assesses the size and complexity of the business before we begin auditing. The audit of an SME is likely to focus on the risks associated with size and evolving management structures rather than complex accounting issues. The audit of a large listed entity is likely to focus on areas of risk arising from diversity in operations and complex transactions, which raise more complex accounting issues.
Aside from the statutory audit of the financial statements of companies, the department handles specialist work such as the audits of pension schemes, charities and grant claims, as well as ‘special work’ such as due diligence and other transaction-related projects.
Our students play a key role in supporting the work described above and, gain tremendous experience to provide top quality career development. You will benefit from on the job training from more senior members of the team, as well as joining peers on internal training courses that will develop you as an individual.
Students will become involved in client work very quickly, initially working as part of a larger team – perhaps taking responsibility for specific audit tests or aspects of the audit file.
The depth of services and clients you will be exposed to early in your career will provide you with a jump start into the varied world of accountancy. We will expose you to the skills you require to become a true trusted advisor to your clients in the future.
What can I expect 3 years down the line?
Throughout your career you can expect to have the space to grow and be challenged, whilst at the same time, have the comfort of the support of your manager and colleagues. We actively encourage innovative thinking and the development of soft skills alongside your technical training, and there is no better place to do this than in the workplace.
Once audit students have passed their initial stages of the ACA/CA exams, the complexity of your work will increase and you will have the opportunity to get involved in more challenging audit issues. We also expect you to now be competent enough to work independently.
Within three years, audit students will be coming towards the end of their ACA studies, and will have a thorough understanding of audit. This will be reflected in the complexity of their workload and other responsibilities such as reviewing the work of other staff.

LEVEL 6 - LATE VACANCY - Thurs 28th April Deadline - Corporate Tax Assistant - Stoke
Vacancy title: Corporate Tax Assistant Intake: August 2016 Scheme: Graduate
Office: Stoke on Trent
Tax is a fact of life – it is deducted from our wages, levied on our purchases (VAT), paid by companies…. and rarely out of the news headlines these days.
However, to think Tax is all about numbers is wrong! Yes, there are numbers involved, but to us, a career in Tax is all about working with people and businesses – it is about getting to know your clients and working with them to help them manage what tax they pay to achieve their goals.
RSM's clients range from wealthy individuals to large companies and we offer a broad spectrum of services to their requirements. The services we offer to clients are tailored to meet individual needs. The breadth of skills and services that RSM offer coupled with the wide range of clients we serve means that you have the opportunity to follow the career path that you want.
Tax with RSM is an area that provides graduates a solid foundation in a broad range of taxes with the opportunity to specialise at a later stage.
Students will be involved in client work from day one - from liaising with clients over the phone or in person, to preparing and completing tax returns for submission to H M Revenue & Customs.
You can expect to be involved in a range of duties, including the preparation and filing of tax returns, reconciliation of tax liabilities and dealing with client queries.
Tax is a technically demanding discipline, so students would be expected to demonstrate a willingness to learn. Good communication and business skills are essential as we encourage all our people to develop relationships with clients.
What can I expect 6 months to 2 years down the line?
Throughout your career you can expect to have the space to grow and be challenged, whilst at the same time, have the comfort of the support of your manager and colleagues. We actively encourage innovative thinking and the development of soft skills alongside your technical training, and there is no better place to do this than in the workplace.
Once tax students have passed their ATT exams, the complexity of your work will increase and you will have the opportunity to get involved in more challenging taxation issues. We also expect you to now be competent enough to work independently.
Within three years, tax students will be coming towards the end of their CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser) studies, and will have a thorough understanding of tax. This will be reflected in the complexity of their workload and other responsibilities such as reviewing the work of other staff.

To land your dream job, you’ll have to be able to show evidence to an employer that you’ve developed expertise in the skills areas that make you an Early Career Professional, as well as having a good degree. The best advice is to send out customised CVs rather than the same one each time. So how do you do this when you’re short of time?
The answer is MyShowcase, the Faculty of Business and Law’s chosen online skills portfolio system. MyShowcase enables you to upload all your evidence of skill and qualifications safely, curate and organise your material, and pull it quickly into a professional-looking online CV, which a prospective employer can view simply by clicking on the URL in an email.
This one hour workshop session includes an introduction to MyShowcase from Mel Powell, Acting Associate Head of Employability, and a hands-on workshop session in which Graduate Employability Interns Molly McConville and Clara Andres will help you through a worksheet giving you all the basic skills needed.
By the end of the session, you will be able to:
1. Set up a MyShowcase account
2. Upload content to it
3. Curate your content using tags and skills frameworks
4. Showcase the content in an online CV or other showcase format
5. Send the showcase for review by a prospective employer
6. See how your skills are progressing on the Early Career Professional framework
This is a great opportunity for those of you looking to apply for jobs in the near future.
Please click on the below doodle poll if you would like to attend.
