Four overseas partner University summer programmes are currently on
offer to faculty students; Switzerland, Netherlands, France & Vietnam.

What is a Summer School?
·
A summer school is a short-term programme, provided by a host institution
or school, that provides tuition and extra-curricular activities during your
summer break. Usually residential, participation in summer schools has been
shown to have beneficial effects on academic progress.

Why would I consider a Summer School?
·
The options to take part in a Summer School programme provide excellent
opportunities to gain academic, cultural and social experiences, offered by our
trusted partners.
·
Improve your CV, demonstrate your enthusiasm for a subject and develop
transferable skills, with like-minded students from a variety of different
countries.
·
Programmes have a business focus and range from 5 days – 4 weeks.
·
Places are limited and there has been significant interest.
·

Fun & Fundraising !! AFE Charity Boat Race - Fri 10th March 2017 :
AFE Charity Boat Race - Friday 10th March :
The AFE Charity Boat Race Event is happening again !!!!
It will take
place on Friday 10th March between 12 – 3pm, and involves teams of 4
(staff teams and student teams or mixed teams) rowing the length of the Oxford
/ Cambridge boat race on rowing machines outside the Business school (under
cover).
It is a time race so each team rows their fastest time. Each team pay
£2 per team to enter and the winning team will get a prize (to be confirmed).
We also have people shaking fundraising cans, and we sell cakes and do other
small events to raise money. The charity is Francis House Children's Hospice in
Didsbury.
Task: Teams (Maximum 4)
will row the length of the Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race and compete to complete
the challenge in the quickest time. The boat race is 6.8 km (4 miles 374 yards)
and this distance is covered by the team as a whole, not each.
Date: Friday 10th March 2017
Time: 12 - 3 pm (Teams can choose a rowing slot of
12pm, 12.30pm, 1pm, 1.30pm, 2pm or 2.30pm)
Location: Business School Main Entrance
Prizes: TBC
Entry fee: A suggested donation of £2 per team member
Request for easy fundraising ideas:
If you have any ideas for small events that we can do alongside the rowing, or if you want to help on the day with fundraising, cake sales, general support and maybe a team effort yourself, that would be amazing. Please promote this to your friends (we need teams of 4) and I will contact all the AFE students directly this week too

ideas and join the hack! Whether this is coming together to watch the Budget
itself, engage with likeminded people, or write a guest article for our
Manchester Policy Blogs site, all are welcome.
The Budget will be screened live
at 12:30, post Budget, Co-director of Policy@Manchester, Professor Andy
Westwood, will be sharing his thoughts to stimulate further conversation and
thought.
A sandwich lunch will be served
following the budget and tea, coffee and water will be provided throughout the
day.
A guided walk around the Manchester Peace Trail
Hello.
I am writing to a number of people who have expressed interest in the
Manchester Peace Trail to invite you to join us on this guided walk around the
Trail. I’m sure you will discover something new about Manchester’s radical
history.

1.30 meet at VICTORIA STATION (under the tiled map)
Finish in Piccadilly Gardens around 4.00.

The
walk will cover sites connected with the growth of Manchester as the world’s
first industrial city and its importance as a centre for peace and radical
political activity, including
· Peterloo and the popular reform movement
· The Free Trade Hall, suffragettes to the
Sex Pistols
· Abraham Lincoln, Manchester Cathedral
and the campaign against slavery
· The Hidden Gem and religious tolerance,
free-thinking and science
· Migration and the movement of peoples
· MAG and the Nobel Peace Prize
· The unknown Elizabeth Raffald
· Historic libraries and public art
· Alan Turing and gay rights (if time
allows)
There is no charge but donations to Manchester CND to help
with our campaigning against nuclear weapons will be welcome.
Manchester Peace Trail was produced by the Manchester City
Council Secretary for Nuclear Free Local Authorities / UK and Ireland Chapter
of Mayors for Peace in conjunction with Greater Manchester CND, and was then
updated as one of the EU-funded peace trails in 7 European cities, launched in
2015 and which opens in this site: www.discoverpeace.eu

David Barker is
Senior Lecturer in Publishing at the University of Derby. In his previous
career he was Editorial Director (2006-11) at Continuum Publishing in New York,
and then Publishing Director (2011-16) at Bloomsbury in London. He has worked
across both academic and trade publishing and has a genuine interest in helping
people from a wide range of interests get into the publishing industry.
This talk, titled “Your Career
in Publishing”, will provide a broad overview of the publishing industry: the
different sectors within it, the wide range of possible roles to pursue, the
skills that employers in the industry are looking for, and possible ways to get
your foot in the door. The talk will last about 40 minutes, with the
opportunity for questions at the end.

Workshop presenters:
Alex Wright-
Alex joined Latitude Law in July 2011 and was a senior caseworker before
qualifying as a Solicitor in 2016. He has previously volunteered with the
Personal Support Unit at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre. He works mostly
in the area of family migration, as well as assisting those without immigration
status.
Caroline Bagley-
Caroline joined Latitude Law as a Caseworker in July 2016 after completing her
LLB and graduating from The University of Liverpool. Caroline worked with the
Liverpool Law Clinic in the final year of her degree, assisting in the provision
of free legal advice and representation on immigration and asylum matters.
Caroline has also worked on projects with the Hillsborough Justice Campaign,
raising awareness and aiding in their fight for justice.
