University lecturer from Chapel St Leonards to take on mammoth 100k challenge for military charity               

A man from Chapel St Leonards is training to compete in a 100k walk across the Yorkshire Dales for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Jack Christian, 63, is a university lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, teaching business students on ethics and sustainability.

He says: “Initially I came across an advert for the event that ran in a local Sheffield paper, then I found myself talking to a friend who’s Served 20 years. Not long after that, by chance, I met and helped a blind person at the railway station while on my way to work. Well it was all too much of a coincidence for me, so I decided I just had to answer the advert and sign up!”

Jack, an avid walker, already maintains a healthy lifestyle and has a particular penchant for setting himself challenges. He says: “The training is going really well, I’ve just competed in a 50k race so I’m confident that come June I’ll be in peak physical condition!”

 Jack, who plans on finishing the course in an incredible 18 hours, is no stranger to long-distance tests, having last year competed in the Cape Wrath race, a daunting 249 mile trail walk from Fort William to Cape Wrath. He says: “Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to do the full race, but I still managed to cover 198 miles in seven and a half days and managed to raise several hundred pounds for charity at the same time. I’m aware of the fantastic work that Blind Veterans UK does in supporting vision-impaired veterans regain confidence and achieve independence, so I’m looking forward to raising money for them as well.”

Registration for the 100k is currently open with a registration fee of £62.50 for the 100k. For those not wanting to walk the full distance there is also a relay option available for teams of four walking 25k each. Teams taking part in the relay have a registration fee of £110. The all-inclusive entrance fee for participants includes lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops, snacks and refreshments along the route and a free event t-shirt.

This year, the 100k Yorkshire will follow a stunning new circular route, which starts and finishes in Darley in the beautiful Nidderdale. From there the route follows the River Nidd, goes onto Brimham Rocks, and past Ripley Castle. Trek through the dramatic rural Yorkshire landscape.

The AFE Charity Boat Race Event is here again!

Friday 10^th March between 12 – 3pm

12 - 3 pm (Teams can choose a rowing slot of 12pm, 12.30pm, 1pm, 1.30pm, 2pm or 2.30pm)

A suggested donation of £2 per team member

We need teams of 4 (staff teams and student teams or mixed teams) rowing the length of the Oxford / Cambridge boat race on rowing machines outside the Business school (under cover).

It is a time race so each team rows their fastest time. Each team pay £2 per team to enter and the winning team will get a prize (to be confirmed).

 

We also have people shaking fundraising cans, and we sell cakes and do other small events to raise money. The charity is Francis House Children's Hospice in Didsbury.

Task: Teams (Maximum 4) will row the length of the Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race and compete to complete the challenge in the quickest time. The boat race is 6.8 km (4 miles 374 yards) and this distance is covered by the team as a whole, not each.

CIMA (the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) would like to offer you the opportunity to attend an interactive Business Game aimed at helping you with your career and giving them an insight into an employer’s assessment centre.

By attending this skills session you will:

• Use as a practice session for Employer Assessment Centres
• Gain an opportunity to use your business skills and find out how this links in to CIMA & management accountancy
• An opportunity to put the Business Game on your CV
• Enhance your employability skills and give you a topic to talk about at interviews
• Walk away with a much improved understanding of business

The business game is based on our final exam the CASE Study, you will read through a scenario and then work in teams to come up with recommendations on how to accelerate the growth of the company and increase its profitability.

 

It’s very similar to the kind of task that is run at an employer’s assessment centre and will encourage the use of skills that employers are looking for.  Each group will get feedback and the winning team will get winning certificates.

 

An important part of the session is finding out what employers want and hints and tips on how to impress.

AFE Student Ball - Later Meal Option For Students Who Are Fasting / Ticket Booking Info

Hi AFE Students,

As Ramadan may fall on Saturday 27^th May this year ( the date of the AFE Student Ball), some of you have said that you are holding off buying tickets as you may be fasting into the evening.

We have taken this into consideration and have spoken with the venue about this. The hotel have been really helpful and have confirmed that they can offer one of two things:

1)  We can offer two sittings of the sit down meal;

One would be approximately 8pm with seating for everybody to sit together (if you wish). This would allow some tables where people are eating, and some not eating but with somewhere to be seated, with a later sitting in a suite attached to the main room for students who have been fasting (from approx. 9.30pm)

OR   (Ideally …)

2)  Our meal can take place at one sitting with all students sat together, but at a later time  -  (from approx. 9.30pm)

You will have plenty to do  - a red carpet entrance with photo opportunities from 7pm, the Garden Bar will be open and there will be games / entertainment for you before the meal

We realise that this is not ideal, but it allows the option. This idea is being put to you to hear what you would prefer collectively…

We want the occasion to be inclusive for all of our students so we are trying to find a fair and understanding option for you to be able to celebrate together. We will keep you updated, but hope that you know we are aiming to resolve this and hope that you can now buy your tickets so that we can get the seating plans in place.  Please let us know if you would be ok with a later sitting.

The Pendulum Hotel, Manchester is just two minutes away from our Business School (The old Manchester Conference Centre) behind East is East / Ibis Hotel). We have been offered a similar package to normal but with a bit more alcohol.  

The Pioneer Suite is recently refurbished, large and spacious, and opens up on to an enclosed Garden Bar with outdoor seating area and heaters!!

If the weather is good it should be a great space to party into the evening.

You may know groups of students who are interested in the marketing of this Ball, planning the colour / theme, or just being on hand to promote the Ball to the students in your year.

You can be involved as much or as little as you wish.

(Please note; volunteers should be available for monthly planning meetings, and on the day itself -  Saturday, 27^th May, early afternoon - to help with decoration and ensure all is running smoothly prior to the event)

Dear Students,   Coaching for Academic English is offering a range of one-off sessions starting next week. Please refer any of your non-native speaker students you feel would benefit from them. I plan on running a few more next term. If you have anything you’d like us to run a session on, please let me know.   The sessions we’re running are:   Writing an Introduction: Are you unsure of what to include in an introduction or how to entice the reader? Come along to this session to learn techniques for writing an introduction.   Paragraphing 101: Have you been told that you need to improve your paragraph structure? Tutors often comment on this in feedback and it can make all the difference to the reader in understanding your writing. This session will give you the tools you need to write a well-structured paragraph.   Starting to be Critical: Are you applying your critical thinking skills? Come along to this session to find out more about how critical thinking can be applied to all aspects of your academic life and how you can use it in the future.   Language for Primary Research: Do you need to conduct primary research for an assignment? The language you use to gather this is very important and can make all the difference to your results. Come along to this session to find out how to get the most out of your primary research.   Writing the Conclusion: Are you reaching the end of your assignment and want to leave the reader with a great impression of your work? Come along to this session to better understand what is involved in writing a conclusion and how this can help you to leave the reader with a good lasting impression.   Writing Succinctly: Do you find yourself going over your word limit and trying to cut words out at the last minute?
