Looking at the job, I don’t think it is graduate level, however, there are opportunities to progress within this role, and lots of graduate levels roles within the group they could move on to…

They would like some CVs by this Friday, 28th April, and it is open to any graduate who has customer service experience so no specific degree discipline.

It is quite good local money and would give some experience with finance that some need.

About the role:-

We have a number of exciting opportunities for placement students to join our finance team to support the delivery of high quality healthcare services to our patients. Opportunities exist within our management accounting, financial accounts and costing teams.

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING: Involves liaising with budget holders of Clinical Service Units (CSUs) and reporting on their financial position. Communication between budget holders and Management Accounting teams is important as this makes the financial position easier to understand and helps to identify areas of concern. We also work closely alongside other internal finance departments, so consistent teamwork and communication is vital. A placement student will provide assistance to our Unit Accountants in the support they provide to one or more CSUs. They will have the opportunity to go to regular budget holder meetings to discuss any financial issues. They will take part in the ‘Month-end’ process which involves producing journals and raising invoices. This also includes the analysis and interpretation of financial information by doing a Variance Analysis and a Movement Report. They will act as the first point of contact for budget holders and may be required to investigate ad hoc financial queries. They will use a variety of systems, for which they will be given prior training - such as: Oracle, Discoverer, OBI, AR Genysis, and Hyperion etc.

COSTING TEAM:
Opportunity to experience an exciting and evolving area of NHS Finance. This team manages our Patient Level Information and Costing System (PLICS), which uses clinical information from numerous electronic feeds to allocate our costs and income to the individual patients we treat. Our information can be analysed and scaled up at various levels to understand the financial performance for each of our specialties, and be used to identify inefficiencies, differences in clinical practice and improvements to the services we offer our patients. Over the course of your placement, you will gain knowledge of a wide range of software packages and systems we use, and help us with creating our information on a monthly basis. You will take part in engagement meetings with clinicians, managers and other finance colleagues to help them to understand and make best use of our information to improve patient services, and help us to continually improve its accuracy from the feedback they provide.

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING TEAM: Supporting the Finance Manager to provide a financial accounting service to the Trust. The team works alongside various internal/external departments and it is essential that there is consistent teamwork and communication between all these departments as their work ties closely together. Over the course of your placement you will be involved in the preparation of control account reconciliations, processing third party payroll pay overs, raising recharge invoices, processing journals, analysing and monitoring assigned accounts and associated information and investigating queries from users of the service and subsequently providing assistance and advice as required. You will also gain knowledge of and have the opportunity to contribute to treasury management, cash flow forecasting, monthly reporting to the Trust Board and Department of Health and assisting in the production and audit of the Trust’s annual accounts and Annual Report. To undertake the role you will utilise a range of financial systems such as Oracle financials, ESR payroll, NEP AR Genisys, and Paye.net etc. - full training will be received.

For all of these roles good communication skills will be required, both verbal and written, along with a professional and positive approach, the ability to manage competing priorities, knowledge of basic financial procedures and principles and good IT skills. The ability to adhere to strict deadlines is essential.

If so, read details below from the organisers of the Association of Corporate Treasurers Annual Conference that is taking place here in Manchester in May …

...We have a great event coming up during May for the Association of Corporate Treasurers – see the enclosed link :   https://www.treasurers.org/annualconference

There will be some great opportunities for students to be involved as volunteers to assist & manage session rooms (microphone duties etc), and this could be a great chance for joint working.

The event will run across 16 - 17th May from 7am -  8pm on day 1 and 7am - 5.30pm on day 2. With the timings being very long, we would like to be able to offer shift patterns to suit the students’ availability. The peak times are at registration on both days and then at our social highlight which takes place on day 1 from 4.30pm (set up) and then till 8.30pm.

Business Focussed Mayoral Hustings Last Friday (31st March) - Link to Watch

Friday, 31st March 2017;Manchester Metropolitan University hosts Business Focussed Mayoral Hustings

Five Mayoral candidates came to Manchester Metropolitan University last night and spoke to businesses, academics and students in an attempt to gain their votes in the upcoming inaugural Manchester Mayoral Elections. The candidates spoke about issues affecting businesses and the economy in Greater Manchester.
Candidates in attendance were as follows:

• Andy Burnham – Labour
• Sean Anstee – Conservative
• Jane Brophy – Liberal Democrats
• Will Patterson – Green Party
• Stephen Morris – English Democrats

Shneur Odze from UKIP also accepted the invitation to speak, but did not attend.

The responsibilities of the Manchester Mayor will be greater than their counterpart in London, and they will join the Greater Manchester Combined Authority as their eleventh member of the city region’s cabinet. He or she will have powers over policing, fire, housebuilding and transport, as well as influence in other areas – such as health and social care – in addition to a considerable voice on the national stage.

Over 300 people turned out to question the candidates, and hear what their policies would be, should they win the election on the 4th May. Public transport dominated the debate, along with homelessness and other issues such as tourism and engaging young people in politics.

Manchester Metropolitan University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Malcolm Press, welcomed the candidates and delegates to the Business School.

He said: “The Mayoral election marks a huge change in how our city region is governed. As an institution we will engage with the first directly elected Mayor, as we do with the existing leaders across Greater Manchester. We were delighted to host a hustings event with partners in the business community and welcome a robust and intelligent scrutiny of the candidates.”

With just over a month left until the 4th of May, the election of the Mayor of Greater Manchester is a landmark event in the process of devolving substantial power in the region, and an exciting opportunity for residents to impact the decision making process on local issues that affect them every day.
