Monthly Employability Bulletin - April 2016
Welcome to your monthly faculty update
on all things employability - related at MMU.
As we come into April the days are getting longer and the academic year
is getting shorter, but there are still plenty of opportunities and events for
Business and Law students to improve their employability, reflecting the hard work being put into improving our
students' professional development and career prospects in many different ways.
Please do share with students via email
or on Moodle! Most events are bookable at http://www.mmu.ac.uk/careers/events/, or http://www.mmu.ac.uk/students/futures/events.php and a separate URL is shown where this is not the
case. Also, make sure they follow @MMU_careers on twitter as they post daily on events,
internships and job opportunities.
Top Story – Business Placements
Valuable new connections
“I just wanted to let you know that
we had the assessment day for one of the roles yesterday (Marketing
Communications) and we had some exceptional students turn up. They are a
credit to your university. We’ve got the shortlist down to 3 students and
it’s a really tough choice between them but we’ll be looking to make an offer
to one of them before the end of the week/early next week”
Mike Needham, Marketing Manager,
Total Fitness Health Club Limited.
Total Fitness have recently linked
with the Business Placements team via a direct lead from Jeff McCarthy (MODB –
thanks Jeff!) We have recently advertised 2 x roles within the growing
marketing team at Total Fitness HQ in Wilmslow, Marketing Communications
Executive & Marketing Insight Executive. At this stage, Total Fitness
have recruited Andrew Williams (Sports Marketing Management) for the
Communications role and they are currently recruiting for the Insight role.
Total Fitness have been really
impressed with our students so far and this will hopefully be just the
beginning of further placements & projects for our students. We
really value our academic colleagues’ wonderful connections, so do please share
any possible leads which may help support our collective increased
employability goals for our students.
“I've got 9 placement students and
having seen them in their workplaces and met with their managers everyone has
attested to the power of placement to network, provide employment as a retainer
for final year and the offer of employment post graduation.” – Angela Byrne
– Senior Lecturer
The Placements team will be doing a
Twitter chat on time management and placements on Wednesday 13th
April: 11am -12pm using the hashtag #MMUPlacementsadvice
New opportunities with MMU’s
FuturesXchange
The FuturesXchange offers part-time,
unpaid, flexible work experience opportunities to students in the Faculty of
Business and Law. We have collaborated with companies in NatWest’s ‘E-Spark’ in
Spinningfields and we are offering 11 opportunities ranging from marketing to
accountancy and finance. These and the other roles we are advertising are a
great opportunity for students to increase their skills with meaningful and
relevant experience and potentially open doors to further opportunities and
paid work. We have had some fantastic outcomes, with a number of students being
offered paid work and permanent jobs at the end of the work experience.
Our website is: bus.mmufuturesxchange.com Please direct any queries to Kate
Pinnock: k.pinnock@mmu.ac.uk.
Help to inspire our final year
students
To encourage and inspire our final
year students to think about their next steps after graduation, Careers and
Employability are running a campaign to showcase current final year students
who have already been successful in securing a graduate position. This campaign
will feature videos and profiles which will appear on the Careers and
Employability blog, website and social media. If you know of any final year
students who have secured a graduate job please get in touch at careers@mmu.ac.uk.
Work and Study with a University-level
Apprenticeship
Manchester Metropolitan University is
leading the way for university apprenticeship opportunities, and we are
currently recruiting for the next cohort of apprentices in Legal Services,
Degree Apprenticeship in Chemical Science, Charter Management Degree
Apprenticeship, and the Degree Apprenticeship in Digital &Technology
Solutions.
The most recent open evening was a
great success, attracting hundreds of potential apprentices, and many employers
looking to capitalise on the opportunities presented. If they win a place on
the programme, apprentices can expect a full-time job with industry experts, a
very competitive salary, and to receive a world-class education. The employers
and the government bear the cost of their study, so they can reasonably expect
to earn the degree or higher-level qualification without incurring any
debt.
The employer partners benefit from
having an input into the course content. This means that they are able to
ensure that their employees have the skills that they need the most. Employer
partners include BT, AstraZeneca, Barclays, Ford, Fujitsu, GlaxoSmithKline,
HMRC, Hewlett Packard, IBM, John Lewis, Lloyds Banking Group and Network Rail,
as well as Law firms such as Horwich Farrelly, and SAS Daniels LLP.
We have received support from
Business Secretary Sajid Javid, who launched a new £10m Degree Apprenticeship
fund on a recent visit to Manchester Met, and from Shadow Minister Nick Boles,
who said:
“Higher Level and Degree
Apprenticeships, like the ones being offered at Manchester Metropolitan
University, will give people the opportunity to study for a top-class
qualification while gaining hands-on experience in the workplace.”

Worthwhile Wednesday - Timetabling - Campaign to keep Wednesday Afternoons Free
Worthwhile Wednesday Campaign
As you’re aware we launched our
Worthwhile Wednesday campaign back in January.
We have had some great
success engaging students with the campaign and have been working with
timetabling to ensure that Wednesday afternoons are kept free.
The next stage of the campaign
is for us to gather the views of students on whether they prefer Wednesday
afternoons free, or Tues and Thurs 6-7PM free. The University is
considering extending lecture times on Tues and Thurs in order to ensure that
Wednesday afternoons are free - this is a big decision so we want to consult as
many students as possible.
As we’re drawing closer to the
Easter break, we would really appreciate your support.
Please fill out the survey and let us know what you think .....
