Returning From Placement ? Try the 2016 ASET Student Competition

2016 ASET Student Competition:

ASET is a Work Based and Placement Learning Association and they’re offering you a chance to share your experiences in an inspirational way for a chance to win some money £££.
“ASET is delighted to announce that the 2016 Student Essay competition opens in September 2016.

To encourage the next cohort of placement students, ASET sponsors this annual competition which highlights what you’ve gained from your recent placement or internship - in no more than 900 words.

We are looking for short accounts which inform others about the value of work experience, clearly express the value of your learning, and do so in a lively and enthusiastic manner.”

There are two categories for entry, each with a prize of £400 for the winner and £100 for highly commended:

Placement/Work experience undertaken in the UK or Ireland

Placement/Work experience undertaken overseas

Some of you will already have done most of the work in writing a blog / placement log or from your Placement Assessment file paperwork – so there’s nothing to lose by going for it!

We rely heavily on ambassadors for UG & PG recruitment events and in return they get paid and are able to gain work experience for their CV.

Study Skills Workshops Support Package This Term

Study Skills related support will be offered by Learner Development (Student Support Services) from the start of the 2016/17 academic year.

Workshops delivered by Student Support Officers

Student Support Officers have produced a new package of generic study skills workshops.

These workshops will be delivered across the university and open to all students enrolled at Manchester Met.

Over a hundred sessions are initially planned for the first term and the location/times of the workshops will vary so that there is flexibility and students can book sessions at a time which suits them. The package of workshops includes the following sessions:

Transition into University	Guidance for Postgraduate Study	Time management and Organisation
Harvard Referencing	Cite it right (avoiding plagiarism)	Essay Writing (Planning)
Critical Thinking	Critical Reading	Essay Writing (Structure and Writing)
Managing Group work	Proof Reading strategies	Managing your Dissertation
Writing Literature Reviews	Revision Skills	Presentation Skills
Exam Tips	Manging your Dissertation

Student Support Officers will continue to offer bespoke study skills workshops for students within their own Faculty in areas that are not part of the above package or if sessions are very specific to a subject area e.g. Report Writing.

Workshops delivered by Dyslexia Study Skills Tutor

We have a new Dyslexia Study Skills Tutor who will be offering generic study skills support to:

· Students who think that they may be dyslexic

· Students who are in the process of being assessed for dyslexia

· Students who have a diagnosis of dyslexia, but are not accessing study skills support from elsewhere e.g. DSA

Many of the sessions will be similar in content to those being delivered by Student Support Officers, but will be delivered in a way which suits the learning style of dyslexic students e.g. more visual and take into consideration slow processing speed etc.

Assistive Technology Workshops

We have an Assistive Technology Specialist who will be offering workshops to enable students make the best use of assistive technology that is available on all University computers. This software can be of benefit to all students, not just disabled students and we are keen to promote this message across the university. Software includes:

· Mind View (mind mapping software that will be available on the standard network platform from September 2016). This software can assist with effective planning of written work, using timeline features and Gantt charts to help break down projects into manageable tasks.

· TextHelp Gold (an upgraded version of Text to Speech Software which can help with proofreading and identification of homophones).

· Inspiration Software (mind mapping – this software is being phased out over two years and will be available to current users only)

Many of these sessions have been approved for the ‘Future Skills Award’ which has a direct link with Employability and we are keen for students to get the most from their studies and their time at Manchester Met.
