Interesting Times

Few would argue we live in interesting times; and interesting times make for interesting discussion.
Contemporary Issues in Economics and Policy is a series of monthly seminars to be given at Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs offices in London and repeated at Manchester Metropolitan University Department of Economics, Policy and International Business. Each seminar will address an issue of importance in the contemporary world of political economy.

The series is designed to foster national debate, hence its parallel venues. Each seminar will be of interest to policy makers, business leaders, members of the public and, indeed, anyone concerned about the state of the present and the future.

To reach as wide an audience as possible, each seminar will be recorded and the series will be supported by a webpage where the series’ video and blog will be hosted.

Plain Talking

The seminars examining Contemporary Issues in Economics and Policy will be jargon-free and with a level of analysis accessible to the lay-person. The purpose is to foster debate, not to cloud the issues.

Each of the seminars will begin with a brief analysis of past and current policy; an evaluation of the impact of this policy in terms of the social and economic wellbeing of the nation; and suggestions for the future. Questions, answers and suggestions from those attending will be more than welcome.

There will be more than 50 main exhibitors as well as 20+ companies in the FinTech Start-up Cafe.

The Asset Managers represent over $12.5 tn of investment assets worldwide and include all the well-known names in UK Retail Investment Management:

Amati Global, Aviva Investors, Blackrock, Brewin Dolphin, Cazenove, Charles Stanley, Columbia Threadneedle, Cornelian, Franklin Templeton, Invesco Perpetual, iShare, Janus Henderson, Just, LGIM, M&G, MAN, NS&I, Old Mutual Wealth, Russell Investments, Schroders, Seven Investment Management, Time Investments, Vanguard and Winton Capital.

The product providers include household names such as Standard Life, Aegon, Aviva, Legal & General, Prudential and Zurich.

There is also an International feel to the event with a number of advisers from beyond the UK attending, together with the European Financial Planning Association (EFPA) and other pan-European groups.

FinTech Start-Up Café
At the other end of the corporate spectrum there will be a FinTech Start-up Cafe where small, new, start-up firms can showcase their tech solutions for clients or advisers using silent disco elevator pitches and one-to-one meetings.

Retail Financial Services is not just about the large corporate world of The City but also has a vibrant entrepreneurial culture underpinning new investor dynamics and client needs.

Festival Radio
Throughout the two days of the Festival we will have Festival Radio interviewing delegates, exhibitors and speakers to share reactions to the event and to highlight particular activities. This will add to the Festival feel for the event which we hope will be unlike all previous such events in Financial Services.

Festival Radio will be based on The Green in the centre of the massive exhibition space which will also be the entertainment hub for the event. Towards the end of the first day there will be music and performance as well as informal networking to allow delegates to relax a little before heading home or to their hotels.

Breakout Presentations
In addition to the main stage presenters that are headlining the Festival there will be four additional stages with a rolling program of 30-minute presentations on a wide range of subjects. In total there will be more than 70 presentations for delegates to choose from on a wide range of subjects:

  • • Soft skills
  • • Financial planning
  • • Retirement planning and retirement income management
  • • Asset Management strategies
  • Market updates and commentaries
  • • Tax and trust planning
  • • International clients

All breakouts will qualify as unstructured CPD so will provide a significant personal development opportunity for all delegates, whatever their experience.

The Future Generations Marquee

There will be an area dedicated to encouraging the next generation to come into the Financial Planning profession. Here there will be short presentations and stands from a range of organisations dedicated to encouraging and developing tomorrow’s talent:

  • Adviser firms with graduate schemes
  • • CPD providers
  • Universities with linked degrees
  • • Apprenticeship providers

Sponsored by The Financial Adviser School and the New Model Business Academy, this area will be a hub for delegates who are interested to bring new talent into their businesses as well as young professionals looking to build a personal career path.
