STARS OF THE MONTH - WINNERS & NOMINEES - October

WINNERS

The two winners of October’s Star of the Month were:

Mahrukh Naz (Level 6 - Accounting and Finance)

Tamara Bamford (Level 5 – Economics)

Mahrukh Naz (Level 6 - Accounting and Finance)

The details of the nomination are:

Mahrukh is one of those rare people who doesn’t seek any praise and doesn’t shout about herself or what she has achieved. Though she is very bright, I suspect that not everything comes naturally to her and that she has to fight hard to get to where she wants to go. She never gave up looking for a placement in her second year and the fact that she obtained one at the last minute was purely down to her perseverance. This is not the only instance of her quiet diligence. Almost to her own surprise (though I am not surprised at all), she has a chance of doing something very special on the degree this year. She is also one of the most polite and genuine students I have ever met and she accepts disappointment with a grace that does us all shame. A role model for the future and an extraordinary young woman to anyone who takes the time to look.

Tamara Bamford (Level 5 – Economics)

The details of the nomination are:

I would like to nominate Tamara Bamford (13157311) – Level 5 (REPWOA) Economics for the Star of the Month award.

Tamara had a very difficult year last year with family / personal problems that led to a mark of 0% in the Jan 15 maths exam. Tamara worked very hard for the May statistics exam and got 50%. She was all set to retake the maths in August but an operation and hospital stay prevented her from doing this.

Tamara works for her family business that makes high-end bespoke curtains. The business has grown from a small home-based enterprise to employing 13 staff on the production side and supplying retailers like Harrods. Tamara’s mum did not want her to go to university as she hoped Tamara would take over the business at 18! Tamara was, and still is adamant, that she wants to complete a degree in Economics. Tamara is however spending this year as a director of the firm but still comes in to see me to prepare for her REPWOA retake in January. What struck me about her was a) she actually remembers / can do the maths from last year and b) how easily she takes a directorship, handling individual contracts worth up to £30k, in her stride.

Tamara is an extremely capable person who is battling her way back after a rough year. An award would show her that we recognise and support this.
If you know these students, please do congratulate them on their achievement!   The full list of nominations is given below.
