Professional Development Week Sessions:

Tuesday 1:

Applying for Graduate Schemes and Managing Your Final Year 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Room 5.04, Speakers = Hazel Doyle and Lisa McDonagh

This session will give you an overview of graduate scheme deadlines and processes, how and where to discover Graduate Schemes and how to successfully progress. MMU Career Consultant Hazel Doyle will deliver this session and students will hear from Student Support Officer Lisa McDonagh, who will give tips on managing your time during this busy year.

This fun and inter-active session will focus on increasing your employment options and increasing your earnings by maximising your power and influence. We will discuss volunteering, paid jobs on and off campus, business related work experience, student societies and our Futures Skills Award scheme.

To land your dream job, you’ll have to be able to show evidence to an employer that you’ve developed expertise in the skills areas that make you an Early Career Professional, as well as having a good degree.

4. Send the showcase for review by your Personal Tutor or a recruiter

Legally Online: How to make your social media profile safe and effective (Marketing and Digital students) 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Lots of us use social media, some of us know how to use it to further our careers – but how many of us are aware of the risks of publishing material about ourselves online? Learn how to do it safely and effectively from top social media lawyer Steve Kuncewicz, Head of Intellectual Property and Media at law firm Bermans.

Referencing Right 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

The last thing you want when having a piece of work assessed is to lose marks by incorrectly citing and referencing in your work. There is nothing worse than having your mark drop because of this and this session aims to give students all the information they need to avoid this happening. We will discuss why and when you need to cite and reference as well as practice how to reference the key sources of information you will use in your work and tackle those tricky references you will discover.

Starting to be Critical 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

This session will give you a better understanding of what it means to be critical in an academic context. Not sure of how to evaluate a journal article, take notes critically or show your critical thinking skills when writing? This session will give you the techniques you need.

Tuesday 1:

LinkedIn in 60 minutes 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Room 2.10, Speaker = Hazel Doyle

LinkedIn is something that all of us have been told is at the forefront of online networking and employability. This session is open to anyone who would like to know a little more about the key features of LinkedIn and how they can use it professionally. We will be covering how to get your profile to ‘All Star’ standard, how to connect with people, giving and receiving recommendations and endorsements, researching employers, industries and job roles, and how to find jobs and work experience.

Please make sure that you have a basic profile set up at LinkedIn.com before you come along. This session will take place in an IT Lab so that you can make amendments to your profile and play around with the features. This session is open to ALL students of all years – UG and PG across Business and Law. We are encouraging first years to attend also!

Awaken the confidence in you 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Room 3.21, Speaker = Chris Delaney

A lack of confidence can often hold us back when we want to pursue something outside our comfort zone. During this session, you will learn the techniques to increase your motivation, boost your confidence and give your self-esteem a well needed lift. Self-confidence will carry you through any situation no matter what it is. Whether you are going for a job interview, speaking in public, parachute jumping or losing weight, having confidence in yourself will enable you to go from strength to strength. We are hoping that by the end of the session you will feel that much more motivated to achieve your goals and break through any doubts you have in your capabilities.

Building the Brand of You 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Many of our marketing, advertising and branding students come to us because of their passion for brands, however the brand that any employer is concerned with is the brand of YOU. This session will introduce to you how PR practitioners use communication to build and maintain the brand reputation of their clients, and how you can apply these principles to the branding of your own professional career development. We will particularly offer practical advice on how you can identify your own brand values and Unique Selling Point, and tips on how to be a fully professional online identity on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Tuesday 1:

Professional Presentations for Interviews 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Room 3.28, Speaker = Catherine Shephard

Presentations aren’t just something you’re required to do when you’re working for your degree: presentation skills are elementary in your job hunt and are often a requirement at interview level for many professions. This session will help you understand how and why presentation skills might be assessed in an interview and what graduate employers look for in prospective employees. You also have the chance to practice how to plan and deliver an effective presentation within the comfort of the classroom. The session will give you skills which are transferable across business and law and beyond.

Wednesday 2:

Sustainability Walk 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Speaker = Jack Christian

This is a chance to see for yourself the effects of lack of awareness of sustainability on the environment in post-industrial areas of Manchester.

Joining instructions:

The field trip will start promptly at 14.00 from the side door of the Business School atrium which leads to the car park under the Mancunian Way. Please arrive 10 minutes before departure as you will be asked to sign to show your attendance. If you are late, you will miss it.

The walk will take around 1 hour 30 minutes. You will need to wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking a long distance and wear or bring warm, waterproof clothing to be ready for changeable weather conditions.

Thursday 3:

Introduction to E-commerce and Magento 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Room 2.08, Speaker = Aaron Saxton

This eCommerce and Magento workshop is aimed at students who are interested in launching their own eCommerce store or want to get understanding of how to use an eCommerce platform like Magento to manage an online business.

This workshop will explain what eCommerce is, how online stores are built, and what job prospects are available in the industry.

The workshop will consist of a mixture of theory and ‘hands on’ practical activities allowing students to work with the backend and frontend of Magento. Students will explore the site structure, navigation, modules, themes etc... and will learn how to customise and optimise their Magento eCommerce site using best practice.

Have you ever wondered if you can use other people’s images and illustrations in your work, in social media posts or when writing your own blog? This session will look at how to correctly format and reference other people’s images and illustrations, as well as your own, within MMU and beyond. We will also showcase some fantastic, free-to-use image resources, demonstrate how to use Google to locate copyright-free images, introduce you to ‘Creative Commons’ licenses, and reveal best attribution practices.

Lots of graduates want to work in this growing sector in the Manchester area, but fewer are aware of what creative and digital employers REALLY want from their applicants. Be the first to get an insider view from industry professionals in this NEW workshop session led by Phil Cookson, Director of Creative Resource.

The session includes:

- keynote talk from an industry professional giving great insight into the best ways to make yourself more employable and get your first job in the industry.

- one-to-one sessions with creative and digital professions to review and advise on your CV

Networking is vital for success in business and helps you create powerful, lasting relationships. It can help you find a new job, meet influential people, make contacts and discover people who will support your ideas.

However, for many people, networking is not easy. It can seem daunting because of a lack of confidence, or a fear of rejection. It can be hard to know how to start, what you are supposed to do, or what happens afterwards. If this sounds familiar, then this session could be for you!

Build your confidence and ‘soft’ communication skills with this networking workshop.

Telephone Confidence 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

You will already know that much of today’s business and recruitment is telephone-based – either by mobile or teleconferencing software. You might not think it, but one of the biggest challenges both employers and graduates report about starting work is simply having to pick up the phone to someone you don’t know – whether this is an interviewer, a customer, a journalist or another important contact of your employer. This is even more difficult when the phone call needs to solve a problem, such as a dissatisfied customer or negotiating an outcome to a tricky issue.

This new focused Telephone Skills session will help you to know how to get control of a business conversation to guide it to your desired outcome and will build your confidence on the phone.

Careers Fairs: Why, Where and How to Prepare 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Graduate Recruitment Fairs are an opportunity to meet employers offering a range of roles ‘face-to-face’. Before attending, you need to do your homework to get the most out of them and impress employers. Find out when and where the fairs take place, how to prepare and how to sell your skills. Our events are open to current students, staff and graduates (up to 3 years after graduation).

Wednesday 2:

Graduate Job and Placement Fair 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Employability Hub, Business School, Manchester Campus

This event is open to all Manchester Met students and 2016 graduates and is a great way to meet employers, find placement and work experience opportunities or secure a job for after graduation. These are employers with real job vacancies and this is your chance to organise your placement or graduate job before the summer. Starting your job or placement search early will increase your chances of being recruited! Meet employers such as Aldi, Amazon, Arcadia, Army, ASOS, Civil Service Fast Stream, NHS, Teach First and UK Fast, and listen to a number of the employers who are holding presentations and get expert advice on how to apply.

Leadership Programme: Public Speaking and Presenting 1 – Discovering Your Voice 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Room 3.26, Business School, Manchester Campus

Not everyone is a natural born speaker, and that’s fine. But public speaking is important, and there is a high chance that at some point, like it or not, you will have to do it. This session aims to show you how to connect with an audience, be better prepared and remain calm when speaking. Discovering your voice as a speaker is a powerful tool that will serve you well.

Shyamenda Purslow, a Doctoral Researcher and Associate Lecturer at MMU with Professional HR experience, will deliver this session.

If you attend 5 sessions of the Leadership Programme, including the wrap-up session which will be taking place in February, you will receive a certificate.

Delivering Presentations – A Specialist Study Skills Workshop for students with an SpLD 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Room 1.01, Sandra Burslem Building, Manchester Campus

This session is a Specialist Study Skills Workshop for students with a Specific Learning Difficulty such as Dyslexia. This session will help students who have to deliver presentations for their course. The session is targeted towards students who think they may be dyslexic, are in the process of being assessed for dyslexia or have a diagnosis of dyslexia, but are not accessing study skills support from elsewhere (e.g. Disabled Students’ Allowance – DSA).

We all network everyday with friends and colleagues, at events and via social media. We’re trying a new approach this year to reduce the demands on both staff and students of events spread over each day of the week. Instead, we’ve given each department/level a ‘designated day’ and tried to concentrate events most relevant to them then:

Monday 31 October – AFE and Law

Tuesday 1 November – Management and all UG

Wednesday 2 November - Graduate Job and Placements Fair – key event for ALL students

Thursday 3 November – MODBS and STHEM

Friday 4 November – especially for PG students

We have many new sessions this PDW, we are keen to get students to attend and gain an idea on their opinions of them:

· Legally Online: how to build a safe and effective social media profile (Marketing and Digital students)

· The Career Farm: personal introduction to the Masters Maximiser Programme

This Professional Development Week, bookings have been very successful. Within two days of the sched site going live, the majority of the sessions were fully booked.

In an attempt to reduce the amount of students booking onto the sessions but not attending, we have tried a new strategy to reach out to students. Usually around 50% of students who book on to PDW don’t attend. Therefore, we have sent out an additional selling in email to push students to either attend the sessions they are booked onto or, if this isn’t possible, to cancel their place. Many students are on the waiting list for a lot of the events, so this would be a great help.

As in other Professional Development Weeks, the students will also get a reminder email the day before the session they have booked onto is occurring. With hope, this should help to reduce the amount of non-attenders we have this coming week.

Study Abroad and Employability

As shown by recent surveys and studies published by the EU, the British Council and other British institutions, graduates with study abroad experiences are stronger in terms of employability. For this reason, it would be great for lecturers to devote a minute during lectures to mention our Erasmus and Overseas Exchange options as fantastic opportunities to enhance students’ university experience and to get ready for the labour market with a stronger and unique cv. The Faculty of Business and Law has 30 excellent partner universities ready to welcome our students for one academic year.

Jo McGrann Wins Student Award at MPA Inspiration Awards 2016

Congratulations to Jo McGrann for winning the Student Award at the MPA Inspiration Awards! Jo is an Advertising and Brand Management graduate and was chosen out of a short list of three other students.

Also in attendance were fellow finalists Dalton Sebastian and Keniz Budhabhai who also did extremely well to be picked as finalists for this award. All the finalists have been offered career advice by the directors of Apadmi, which is great for them also!

Jo and all the finalist have put in so much effort and have undertaken a massive amount of work and the actual event was a celebration of their achievements.

Again well done to Jo, all who were involved in the event running and organising and all the finalists as well!

Marketing Mic Night

The first Marketing Mic Night was hosted on 20 October and the next event is coming soon. This event is a free open mic night for marketing professionals.

Held at MediaCom, Manchester, this event is an exciting opportunity to share knowledge as top class post graduate students take to the stage to share key notes on their area of study.

The pilot event took chance to showcase the dissertation work of alumni: Suzi Blake, Lydia Simpson, Donna Kelly and Tanya Hemphill.

Hospitality Business Management Students given rare insight into top jobs with welcome week Industry conference

The Hospitality Business Management Degree at Manchester Metropolitan University has kicked off the academic year with an industry conference, to introduce new and returning students to some of the big names in food and hospitality management.

The aim of this conference is to engage the students early on with the practical nature of the degree, and give them an insight into the working lives of some of the industry’s top professionals.

The morning conference is a yearly feature, and in 2016, it was hosted at, number 70 Oxford Road, formerly the Cornerhouse.

Amanda White, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Hospitality Business Management welcomed the students and introduced a packed programme of speakers. These included Peter Ducker, Chief Executive of the Institute of Hospitality and TV Food Chef and founder of Mowgli Street Food, Nisha Katona.

Amanda went on to give an overview of the Student Award and passed over to Lecturer in Hospitality Management Stewart Morrell for some information about the Paris Field Trip, and optional extra for the course participants in their first year.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the students beginning their Hospitality Business Management Degree, and wish them all the best for the upcoming academic year.

Competitions

Hospitality Business Management: We are very fortunate to have great support from our industry partners and we have the first two offers of work shadowing opportunities.

Adrian Ellis, GM of The Lowry and Gary Johnston GM of Mere Resort have offered us the opportunity of one student to go and shadow them in the workplace for the day during November! These are amazing opportunities – once in a lifetime! Students have been asked to register interest in competing in the first instance.

These opportunities will take place prior to Christmas – in January two more shadowing opportunities will be launched, so keep checking for that!

Events Management: The team launched a competition, which will last until the end of March next year.

The aim of the competition is to see which seminar group can complete the most event volunteering jobs between now and the end of March. Each time you volunteer, students send their personal tutor an email with a photo attached of their volunteering at the job, and state what the event is.

Each email we received, the seminar group students are from will get a team point. The team with the most points by the end of March will receive a treat!

Tourism Management

Final year students will visit the World Travel Market in London on a two day field trip. This visit includes a visit to WTM with fabulous networking opportunities with employers from around the globe but also the opportunity to attend employer focused workshops and seminars during the event. Whilst in London the Tourism team have arranged for our students to visit Qantas and ABTA head offices for talks and introductions from senior management – career opportunities will be identified!

Placement News

Each year we are pleased to present fabulous USA opportunities to our students and delighted that we are one of a handful of UK universities that these specific employers recruit from.

With over 50% of our STEHM students this year who elected to go overseas we anticipate a busy few weeks as each recruiter not only presents their internship programme but will then go on to interview on the day – we could have our first STEHM students placed by the end of the month!

USA November includes employers from Private Member American Country Clubs (Predominantly New York, Florida and Fort Lauderdale/Miami) 5 star Island resorts and of course Walt Disney (second stage interviews).

The City Football Group (CFG)

The CFG have joined us and 35 students from across the Faculty of Business and Law to promote their 2017/2018 Graduate Scheme, which is open for applications.

They presented to our students and outlined background to their business and the graduate scheme as well as explaining the process. Many students expressed an interest in applying!

Last year, CFG took on board five graduates (including a few from MMU from 600 applications initially).

It is a tough process so fingers crossed to our students for this year!

Assessment centre feedback

Careers and Employability would like to hear from any students who have recently taken part in an assessment centre for a campaign to raise awareness of the support available. We are looking to speak to students willing to take part in a series of blogs to share their tips and experiences with other students. It’s all part of their campaign to spread the word about their grad careers (while spreading a bit of joy at the same time).
