House of Commons – Social Statistics Research Assistant
The Social and General Statistics Section is
one of eight teams providing a specialist, politically impartial information
and briefing service for MPs, their staff, committees and staff of the House
The section produces a wide range of material and other services, including confidential answers to enquiries from Members of Parliament and briefing on legislation and topical subjects. These are made available to MPs on the Parliamentary intranet and in some cases, its public website. There are nine researchers in the Social and General Statistics Section who specialise in broad subject areas. These include statistics on health, social benefits, pensions, transport, population, elections, agriculture, education, housing, defence, energy and the environment.
The Section’s work covers the UK and other countries and is directly related to the Parliamentary and news agenda. The Section typically deals with 300 to 400 requests from MPs a month, in addition to other tasks.
The purpose of the Social Statistics Research Assistant (Sandwich Placement) is to: Assist statisticians in their day to day research work Participate in research projects at the direction of their line manager Effectively communicate and liaise with MPs and their staff Other duties as necessary
The Person
Candidates will be studying towards an Economics, Politics or Social Sciences or other relevant degree with an integrated Statistics module. Candidates must be studying on a recognised four year sandwich placement course.
The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:
•Ability to deal with numerical information and spreadsheets
•Good communication skills; written and oral
•Proven organisational skills
