on
Thursday 5th October at 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm in G35
In this inaugural lecture, Professor
Kevin Albertson from the Future Economies Research Centre, Manchester
Metropolitan University will theorise the conflicting claims of the global,
the national and the local on individuals and the democratic governments they
form. In “Globalisation, Nationalism and Devolution: Promoting localism in an
interconnected world” he will be arguing, amongst other things, that globalisation
produces losers as well as winners and the role that an appropriate nationalism
and localism might play in shaping the economic and social consequences of
modern global forces.
This free seminar, including time
for subsequent questions, will take place in the London offices of HMRC and
Manchester Metropolitan University Business School.

Interesting Times
Few would argue we live in interesting times; and
interesting times make for interesting discussion.
Contemporary Issues in
Economics and Policy is a series of monthly seminars to be given at Her Majesty’s
Revenue and Customs offices in London and repeated at Manchester Metropolitan
University Department of Economics, Policy and International Business. Each
seminar will address an issue of importance in the contemporary world of
political economy.
The series is designed to foster national debate, hence its
parallel venues. Each seminar will be of interest to policy makers, business
leaders, members of the public and, indeed, anyone concerned about the state of
the present and the future.
To reach as wide an audience as possible, each seminar will
be recorded and the series will be supported by a webpage where the series’
video and blog will be hosted.
Plain Talking
The seminars examining Contemporary
Issues in Economics and Policy will be jargon-free and with a level of
analysis accessible to the lay-person. The purpose is to foster debate, not to
cloud the issues.
Each of the seminars will begin with a brief analysis of
past and current policy; an evaluation of the impact of this policy in terms of
the social and economic wellbeing of the nation; and suggestions for the
future. Questions, answers and suggestions from those attending will be more
than welcome.

Festival Radio
Throughout the two days of the Festival we will have Festival Radio interviewing delegates, exhibitors and speakers to share reactions to the event and to highlight particular activities. This will add to the Festival feel for the event which we hope will be unlike all previous such events in Financial Services.
Festival Radio will be based on The Green in the centre of the massive exhibition space which will also be the entertainment hub for the event. Towards the end of the first day there will be music and performance as well as informal networking to allow delegates to relax a little before heading home or to their hotels.
