Majesty’s Revenue and Customs

Thursday 2nd November, G35 5pm - 7.30pm – Seminar organised by Kevin Albertson
Interesting Times
Few would argue we live in interesting times; and
interesting times make for interesting discussion.
Contemporary Issues in
Economics and Policy is a series of monthly seminars to be given at Her Majesty’s
Revenue and Customs offices in London and repeated at Manchester Metropolitan
University Department of Economics, Policy and International Business. Each
seminar will address an issue of importance in the contemporary world of
political economy.
The series is designed to foster national debate, hence its
parallel venues. Each seminar will be of interest to policy makers, business
leaders, members of the public and, indeed, anyone concerned about the state of
the present and the future.
To reach as wide an audience as possible, each seminar will
be recorded and the series will be supported by a webpage where the series’
video and blog will be hosted.
Plain Talking
The seminars examining Contemporary
Issues in Economics and Policy will be jargon-free and with a level of
analysis accessible to the lay-person. The purpose is to foster debate, not to
cloud the issues.
Each of the seminars will begin with a brief analysis of
past and current policy; an evaluation of the impact of this policy in terms of
the social and economic wellbeing of the nation; and suggestions for the
future. Questions, answers and suggestions from those attending will be more
than welcome.

“From day 1 I have been actively contributing to live projects and doing meaningful work – I think placement students often have concerns that they might be left with arbitrary or administrative tasks as an intern, but that certainly hasn’t been the case for me. I’m also getting an incredible insight into the City, which will give me a real advantage when I come to apply for jobs as a graduate. I already know the reputation, culture and benefits of the firms I’ll be approaching next year, along with what type of employee they look for and what is actually involved in the day to day for a range of different types of roles. It’s an incredible head start to have over many of my academic peers. I couldn’t recommend BRUIN enough as somewhere to do your Industrial Placement year. ”
