The Writing Project - FREE 10 Week Course In How To Write Better English

The popular Writing Project is now open for online registration for Term 3. It is an English language support scheme, established to help students improve their written work and therefore their grades and job prospects. Students can enrol at: http://www.writingproject.mmu.ac.uk/.

The Writing Project, which starts during W/c 24th April 2017, is a free course in how to write better English and is open to any MMU-enrolled student who would like to improve the way they write. This term, we are also offering courses as a ‘Fast-track’ over four and five weeks, and early evening classes.

It covers academic and non-academic areas and will focus mainly on style, punctuation, grammatical accuracy, organisation and how to paraphrase and summarise effectively.

It will run at Crewe and All Saints campuses during each term and the summer. There is no formal assessment. However, students will do exercises in writing during the weekly face-to-face sessions and for homework (optional), and will be provided with plenty of feedback on their writing as the course progresses.

We welcome requests to schedule specific courses at a time when your students are free.

Students who complete 80% or more of their Writing Project classes receive a certificate.

The Writing project is part of a wide ranging set of services offered by the Learner Development Service. We also offer an extensive programme of study skills workshops covering a wide range of topics. Please encourage your students to attend the different available workshops. For more information and to book a place: www.mmu.ac.uk/LD/skillsdevelopment.

For more information, or to book a place on one of the Writing Project courses, please visit our web site www.writingproject.mmu.ac.uk or contact writingproject@mmu.ac.uk.

International students are welcome, but could also use the existing Coaching for Academic English course, offered by the Language Centre, which is designed specifically for students whose first language is not English.

If you need more information or clarification of any of the above, please contact me. (Please do not reply all as this email was sent to multiple staff).

Kind Regards

Andy

A BIG THANK YOU / Money Raised For Francis House Children`s Hospice

Hi everyone,

We just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to all who supported the AFE Charity Boat Race again this year, including our many students and staff rowers, and all who made and bought cakes, donated money and gave their time to take part.

Since Friday lunchtime we have raised a respectable £201.25 in cake sales and rowing fees for Francis House Children`s Hospice.

We have added this to the £159.25 raised at our last Boat Race event, and will be sending £360.50 to the charity on behalf of all the students and staff on the Accounting, Finance & Economics Department at Manchester Metropolitan University. The event was great fun and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

The Winning Team were `The Superstars` made up of Tom Hindmarch, Vivien Sheard, Sarah Yates and Daniel Sheratte. They win our engraved AFE Charity Boat Race Trophy 2017 (the size of a large eggcup. It`s tiny!) with a great time of 30.06 minutes over the 6.8km. Well done!!!

Our staff and student teams made up of Chris Pyke, Matthew Gobey, Marcin Wozniak, Yasar Zahid, Kat Werner, Anest Williams, Bea Carter, Sikander Riaz, Sam Thistlewaite, Toria Byrne, Alice Pugh, Richard Watson and Shaun Chua, all put in a great display,  with Team 2 (Toria, Alice, Richard & Shaun) coming a very close second.

Special Mentions go to Jack Christian, and Kat Werner`s husband Mark who took on their challenge singlehandedly with incredible times of 33.11 and 34.36 respectively. Thank you everyone for buying lots of cake, making the afternoon a lot of fun, and helping to support a great cause!

Many thanks again,

Clare, Sophie & Anest

Please Support Jack Christian - 100k Challenge - Blind Veterans UK

University lecturer from Chapel St Leonards to take on mammoth 100k challenge for military charity
A man from Chapel St Leonards is training to compete in a 100k walk across the Yorkshire Dales for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Jack Christian, 63, is a university lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, teaching business students on ethics and sustainability.

To support Jack as he takes on the 100k for Blind Veterans UK, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/JackChristian

He says: “Initially I came across an advert for the event that ran in a local Sheffield paper, then I found myself talking to a friend who’s Served 20 years. Not long after that, by chance, I met and helped a blind person at the railway station while on my way to work. Well it was all too much of a coincidence for me, so I decided I just had to answer the advert and sign up!”

Jack, an avid walker, already maintains a healthy lifestyle and has a particular penchant for setting himself challenges. He says: “The training is going really well, I’ve just competed in a 50k race so I’m confident that come June I’ll be in peak physical condition!”

Jack, who plans on finishing the course in an incredible 18 hours, is no stranger to long-distance tests, having last year competed in the Cape Wrath race, a daunting 249 mile trail walk from Fort William to Cape Wrath. He says: “Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to do the full race, but I still managed to cover 198 miles in seven and a half days and managed to raise several hundred pounds for charity at the same time. I’m aware of the fantastic work that Blind Veterans UK does in supporting vision-impaired veterans regain confidence and achieve independence, so I’m looking forward to raising money for them as well.”

Registration for the 100k is currently open with a registration fee of £62.50 for the 100k. For those not wanting to walk the full distance there is also a relay option available for teams of four walking 25k each. Teams taking part in the relay have a registration fee of £110. The all-inclusive entrance fee for participants includes lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops, snacks and refreshments along the route and a free event t-shirt.

You can find out more information and sign up at
blindveterans.org.uk/100k.

This year, the 100k Yorkshire will follow a stunning new circular route, which starts and finishes in Darley in the beautiful Nidderdale. From there the route follows the River Nidd, goes onto Brimham Rocks, and past Ripley Castle. Trek through the dramatic rural Yorkshire landscape.

Tues 7th March 1 -2pm CIMA Mock Assessment Centre - 1.01 SB (Sandra Burslem)

CIMA Mock Assessment Centre Guest lecture -   Tuesday 7th March   1 - 2pm

CIMA (the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) would like to offer you the opportunity to attend an interactive Business Game aimed at helping you with your career and giving them an insight into an employer’s assessment centre.

By attending this skills session you will:

  • Use as a practice session for Employer Assessment Centres
  • Gain an opportunity to use your business skills and find out how this links in to CIMA & management accountancy
  • An opportunity to put the Business Game on your CV
  • Enhance your employability skills and give you a topic to talk about at interviews
  • Walk away with a much improved understanding of business

The business game is based on our final exam the CASE Study, you will read through a scenario and then work in teams to come up with recommendations on how to accelerate the growth of the company and increase its profitability.

It’s very similar to the kind of task that is run at an employer’s assessment centre and will encourage the use of skills that employers are looking for.  Each group will get feedback and the winning team will get winning certificates.

An important part of the session is finding out what employers want and hints and tips on how to impress.
