The Office for National Statistics (ONS) produce numbers and analysis that are at the centre of the stories that make the news and affect our lives. You will use your expertise and develop new skills to tackle the big issues affecting society. Your relevant and timely advice will contribute to the Government Statistics Service (GSS) vision of "Better Statistics, Better Decisions."

What is being offered?

We have year-long Sandwich Placement opportunities in a variety of disciplines in ONS offices in Fareham, Newport and London.
There Placement area`s offer you an opportunity to to put into practice skills and knowledge you have already obtained in your studies. You will work with others, learn new technologies/approaches and understand how the work across the ONS influences and shapes decision making.

You will work with other team members focusing on discrete pieces of work for which you will be responsible. The research may form part of larger projects but will be self contained to allow students to undertake research/analysis from start to finish.

The work is challenging and diverse and implicitly or explicitly informs the development of social and economic policy and decision making often making headline news on a daily basis.

Who is eligible?
You must be studying for a degree in a subject relevant to the post you are applying for. You must be in at least your second year of study and must be returning to university after completing your placement. The profession specific details of each post will inform you if there are any further eligibility requirements.

Qualifications

You must have at least one A-Level (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to the post you are applying for AND you must be studying in your second year of a degree course seeking a one-year placement for your third year. Detailed requirements are profession specific and are contained within the job descriptions attached to this notice.

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.
Successful candidates must pass basic security checks.

Nationality statement

Candidates will be subject to UK immigration requirements as well as Civil Service nationality rules.

If you're applying for a role requiring security clearance please be aware that foreign or dual nationality is not an automatic bar. However certain posts may have restrictions which could affect those who do not have sole British nationality or who have personal connections with certain countries outside the UK.

Selection process details

You are asked to provide a personal statement of up to 900 words stating which profession/business area you are interested in and why. You are asked to include examples against the job specific competencies/ achievements highlighted in the guidance document attached to this advert.

You must also provide details of the modules you have studied and the profession to which they relate to e.g for for Economist modules state Economics

Applications without this details will be discounted.

Candidates that pass the sift will be invited to interview.

The interview will assess your knowledge and experience against the profession specific criteria as stated within the relevant post specifications attached and for some posts will also test the 2 Civil Service;
